Hiking Forward: Lent, Reflection, and Balanced Perspective

On April 8, 2025, I hiked up Cowles Mountain at 4:00 PM, reaching the summit in 32 minutes. With Lent’s final Wednesday coming tomorrow and Holy Week around the corner, this felt like the right time to reflect. We had just returned to Rosa Parks Elementary after spring break (March 31–April 4), and the stress was noticeable. A co-worker of mine reflected on an interaction that didn’t feel as it should, and although nothing was directly wrong, I ended up making a call to express my concern. Later, I felt guilt about how I handled it. This Lent, I’ve been focusing on being present, reflective, and compassionate—toward others and myself.

Between March 29 and April 6, I paused my regular CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 study schedule and job search to refocus. I realized I’d left off key accomplishments—like rebuilding the voicemail system at Mission Bay High School—from my resume. I also improved how I manage tasks by syncing Alexa with Todoist, which lets me log reminders like checking my National University email with my voice. Spiritually, I’ve learned from Jewish traditions that praise God for the sun, sky, earth, and wind—which I now incorporate into my own prayers. I also remembered something valuable from San Diego Mesa College and my Business Communications class in the early 2000s: it’s important to consider multiple perspectives instead of diving too deeply into one. That mindset has helped me grow—in prayer, in career development, and in how I relate to others. Tomorrow, I’ll climb Cowles again, full of gratitude for the steps I’ve taken and the ones still ahead.
