From Glasgow to Pittsburgh: The McCabe Family Branch

Edward McCabe was born in March 1861 in Scotland, according to the 1900 United States Census, which lists him living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife Sarah Ann McAvoy and their children. Census records show that by 1900 the family lived on Independence Street in Pittsburgh’s 35th Ward, an industrial neighborhood shaped by railroads, factories, and the steel industry. Their children listed in that census include Mary Sarah McCabe (born 1886), Joseph Edward McCabe (born 1893), John McCabe (born 1896), and Michael Henry McCabe (born about 1898).

Some records suggest that Edward may have been born in Glasgow on March 28, 1861, the son of Michael and Mary McCabe, both originally from Ireland. Scottish census records from the 1860s and 1870s list a household in Glasgow with parents Michael and Mary McCabe and children named James, John, Mary, and Edward. While the names and dates closely match the Pittsburgh records, additional documentation is still needed to fully confirm that this Glasgow household is the same Edward McCabe who later settled in Pennsylvania.

From Pittsburgh, the McCabe family continued into later generations. Records show that Joseph Edward McCabe married Elizabeth Jane Genung, and other branches of the family appear in Pennsylvania census and vital records during the twentieth century. The story of Edward McCabe and Sarah Ann McAvoy reflects a broader migration pattern of the late nineteenth century, when workers from Scotland and Ireland moved to industrial cities like Pittsburgh in search of new opportunities.
