AI Assistants and the New Security Risks

Artificial intelligence assistants are becoming powerful tools for developers and IT workers. A recent article by security researcher Brian Krebs described how new “agentic” AI systems can control files, execute programs, browse the internet, and interact with messaging platforms automatically. One example discussed was an experimental tool called OpenClaw, an autonomous AI assistant designed to run locally on a computer and take initiative on behalf of the user. While these systems can improve productivity, they also introduce new security risks if they are not carefully controlled.

Security researchers have already demonstrated several dangers. In one case, a misconfigured AI assistant exposed its web interface to the internet, allowing attackers to view stored credentials such as API keys, OAuth tokens, and signing keys. With this access, attackers could impersonate the user, read private conversations, or extract sensitive data through the assistant’s existing integrations. Other experiments showed that attackers could use “prompt injection,” where malicious instructions hidden in text trick an AI system into performing unintended actions.

Experts warn that AI assistants combine three dangerous capabilities: access to private data, exposure to untrusted content, and the ability to communicate externally. When these features are present together, the system becomes vulnerable to data theft or manipulation. As organizations adopt AI assistants more widely, security professionals are beginning to focus on isolating these systems, using virtual machines, network restrictions, and strict policy controls. The challenge going forward will be balancing the productivity benefits of AI with the need to maintain strong cybersecurity defenses.
