Protecting Your Phone Number from SIM Swap Attacks

Today I learned how vulnerable our cell phone numbers can be in modern cybersecurity threats like SIM swapping. Attackers don’t always need your password—they can take control of your phone number and use it to reset accounts tied to SMS-based authentication. This creates a chain reaction where email, banking, and social media accounts can all be compromised.

Instead of focusing on how attackers steal phone numbers, I focused on how to defend against it. Strong protections include using app-based authenticators instead of SMS, setting a carrier PIN with your mobile provider, and removing your phone number as a recovery option where possible. Security keys and multi-factor authentication apps provide a much stronger layer of defense than text messages.

Even if a phone number is eventually taken, accounts can still be protected by separating authentication methods. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, users should avoid relying solely on SMS for account security and instead use phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication.
