Today, I explored phishing, a cyberattack that tricks victims into revealing sensitive information via email, calls (vishing), or SMS (smishing). Techniques like suspicious links, domain spoofing (e.g., “microposoft.com.ru”), and impersonating companies like Visa highlight the importance of awareness training, multi-factor authentication, and verifying communication sources. I learned about phishing in-depth from this video, which emphasized proactive defenses to reduce risks. Additionally, I used Notion’s Kanban boards to organize my job search. I added roles like SOC Analyst and Information Systems Analyst, ensuring I track deadlines and application statuses efficiently. This system keeps me focused as I pursue cybersecurity positions.
In my COMP 609 class, I learned about the security landscape, including the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) and control types like IDS/IPS monitoring. Security challenges include sophisticated attacks, attack scale and velocity, and the proliferation of attack tools. I also reviewed security job roles in SOCs (Security Operations Centers), where analysts monitor and respond to threats at various tiers. Tomorrow’s plan includes hiking Cowles Mountain, applying for jobs like COMPUTER MAINT/REPAIR-CE/VOC, studying for the SY0-701 Security Exam, and learning about cryptographic solutions. Despite recovering from the flu this week, I’m staying productive and proactive in my cybersecurity journey. Knowledge is the key to staying ahead of attackers!
