Learning and Growing: My Security+ Study Journey and Job Search

Over the past few days, I’ve been diving deep into the study material for the SY0-701 Security+ exam. While watching a series of videos on how to pass this certification, I gained valuable insights into key concepts that have broadened my understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals.

One of the concepts that stood out to me was non-repudiation, which involves ensuring both proof of integrity and proof of origin. This is achieved through hashing for integrity and digital signatures for verifying origin. These tools are essential for building trust in systems and ensuring the authenticity of communications.

I also delved into the Triple A model:

  • Authentication involves verifying a user’s identity through methods like passwords or certificates.
  • Authorization focuses on assigning the right access permissions to users or groups.
  • Accounting ensures actions are logged, such as login times, to maintain an audit trail for security purposes.

Another key takeaway was gap analysis, a systematic process for identifying weaknesses by comparing a current state to a desired baseline. Frameworks like NIST 800-701 Rev 3 or ISO/IEC 72001 help set these baselines. I also learned that choosing the right team to establish this baseline is crucial—it requires individuals with experience, training, and a deep understanding of policies and procedures. This process provides a structured way to highlight areas for improvement and strengthen organizational security.

On the job front, I recently applied for a supervisory IT program position. While I don’t think I meet all the qualifications, I decided to apply anyway. Taking a chance on opportunities, even those that feel like a stretch, is an essential part of growth. Every application I submit is a step forward in my cybersecurity career journey.

On a personal note, I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather. Thankfully, my headache has subsided, which makes it easier to stay productive. Tomorrow, I’m looking forward to tuning into the 10 AM live feed of 1st Lutheran Church in San Diego, CA—a moment of reflection and connection that I think will uplift my spirits.

As I balance studying, job applications, and personal health, I’m reminded of the importance of perseverance. Each step, no matter how small, is progress. The journey isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it.
